TEACHERS IN INNOVATION AWARDS 2018

1. WHY THE TEACHERS IN INNOVATION AWARDS 2018?

and student engagement are a central part of Bikas Udhyami’s activities to empower young Nepali to think differently about issues they care about. We depend on our network of student leaders, education institutions, and especially teachers in order to bring our events, and activities to students. Given the exemplary role teachers fulfill, they should be at the forefront of introducing and promoting innovation in higher education in Nepal to ensure that students are equipped with the critical thinking, argumentative, professional and entrepreneurship skills needed in today’s competitive job market.

Therefore, on the occasion of Bikas Udhyami’s second anniversary, and continuing our tradition of supporting innovation and creativity, we are launching the TEACHERS IN INNOVATION AWARDS in partnership with the Global Academy of Tourism and Hospitality Education (GATE College), Republica Media (Official Media Partner) and Smart Solutions (Official Technology Partner).

The aim of the award is to recognise and honour teachers in higher education, who have introduced innovation and innovative methods in teaching in the classroom. Innovation can encompass anything from introducing new course subjects or teaching methods, creating practical learning opportunities for students, promoting the use of technology and online resources, etc. Through the Awards, we aim to put the spotlight on their positive stories of change and inspire others to follow in their footsteps.

Five teachers who are teaching at UNIVERSITY level, will be selected in 2018 for the Awards,which will be awarded on an annual basis.

2. AWARDS

The five winners of the Awards will receive prizes which they must use to promote further innovation educational activities within their respective college or to promote innovation among teachers in higher education in Nepal in general.

The prizes are as follows:

1st Place: Rs. 100,000

2nd Place: Rs. 75,000

3rd Place: Rs. 50,000

4th + 5th Place: Rs. 25,000 each

3. THE NOMINATION PROCESS

The teachers can be nominated by a colleagues, students, themselves or any other citizen who wish recognize their contribution to innovation in Nepali higher education. To do this, users only have to fill out a short form.

4. ELIGIBILITY FOR NOMINATION

  • Any teacher who is a Nepali citizen and has been teaching in an accredited institution of higher education in Nepal for at least 3 years up the day of the awards ceremony. This includes private, community and eligible TVET institutions.
  • An individual can be nominated twice, however, it will not impact their chances of winning the award. The award is based on the merit of a teacher’s innovation and not on the frequency of nominations.
  • Teachers who teach +2, A Levels, O Levels, or at higher secondary level i.e. grade 12 or lower are ineligible for nomination.
    • If they teach at university level as well as higher secondary level, they can only be nominated for their university level classes.

5. WHO CAN SUBMIT AN APPLICATION

  • Any student, faculty or staff of an accredited institution of higher education in Nepal in which the nominee currently teaches. This includes former employees, alumni and former teachers.
  • Any Nepali citizen who is 18 years of age or older.

6. AWARD CRITERIA

Contributions to advancing teaching and learning in Nepali higher education with a particular focus on innovative teaching and on providing students with innovative ways of learning can be demonstrated by some of the following:

  • Curricular innovation, curricular/course design and redesign initiatives;
  • Development and creation of innovative teaching materials or textbooks;
  • Innovative teaching with technology;
  • Collaborative initiatives at the university level to improve quality of teaching and learning through educational innovation (creating partnerships with other institutions to introduce new opportunities for students);
  • Sharing and dissemination of teaching innovations;
  • Other innovative educational initiatives.

Evidence in support while filling out the nomination form may include some of the following:

  • Clear description of teaching innovations, and/or creative approaches to teaching that were developed to improve student learning, including their planning, development, execution and assessment;
  • Direct and indirect evidence of the value of the developed innovative strategies and their effectiveness in improving student learning;
  • Description of teaching materials developed.

7. SELECTION PROCESS

STAGE 1 : NOMINATION

28th July, 2018 -- 11th August, 2018 (15 days)

The first part of the process, Stage 1, will consist of receiving nominations from the online form.

STAGE 2 : VETTING AND SHORTLISTING

12th August 2018 -- 31st August, 2018 (20 days)

Vetting and shortlisting process done by Bikas Udhyami to make sure that all the nominations received are credible and legitimate.

STAGE 3: ONLINE VOTING

September 1, 2018 -- September 15th, 2018

Bikas Udhyami will collect the profiles of shortlisted nominees and publish these online via a dedicated page on its website and/ or independent award portal and via social media so that people can vote for their favorite innovative teacher. This will be open for 2 weeks.

STAGE 4 : JURY SELECTION

September 17th, 2018 -- September 21st, 2018

The nomination form and materials of the shortlisted candidates will be presented to a jury, who will then decide the recipient of the award.
